4/12/2023 0 Comments Cortana hal 9000Thus, thought the imposing AI would make the perfect home assistant. However, all these pale into insignificance in front of the cold, uncaring persona of the HAL 9000. HAL and Cortana probably become friends, though they cannot occupy the same systems because of hardware and software incompatibilities trying to run Cortana on HAL's hardware would be like trying to run Windows 8 on a microwave, and the reverse wouldn't be any more successful. There have been many robots and AIs in science fiction over the years, from Astro Boy to Cortana, or even Virgil for fans of the long-forgotten Crash Zone. Cortana is more likely to murder the crew than HAL is. As he is not a Marathon/Halo type AI, he cannot go rampant, or otherwise decide to go off-mission or do his own thing. HAL in his natural, working-as-intended state is entirely benign and loyal. In the 2010 mission, HAL's orders were cleared during reboot, completely removing the issue. The people in charge of the Monolith bit simply didn't pay attention to this problem, assuming it'd work out or something. The fact that "Highest Priority" type orders that are in conflict could cause issues like this was actually known by HAL's designer, and was supposed to have been made clear before the mission. The conflict of "tell the crew everything" and "tell the crew nothing" could only be resolved by rendering this issue moot, IE there is no crew to lie to or report to. HAL's murderous rampage was caused by an internal paradox, where he was required to report everything of importance to his crew without concealment or deception, but also required to keep all information regarding the Monolith completely secret from the crew. Without knowing what kind of ship we're talking about, there's no way to prove or disprove the issue. This is, of course, all assuming that there are close-able heavy doors between the various rooms that make up the ship's interior and that HAL is able to remotely cut the power from them. Since Master Chief is presumably not starting out right next to HAL's server room or the ship's power supply and HAL can seal and shut down doors, it'd be pretty easy to trap MC in whichever room he happened to be in. I'm not familiar with how Master Chief's suit rebreather or whatever works, but I'm willing to bet he'll run out of air eventually. Unless Master Chief can punch through them, he'd be trapped.Īlternatively, since HAL is presumably connected to everything in the ship, he could simply jettison ALL of the oxygen in the vessel. As for hacking the doors HAL could likely just disconnect them from the ship's power supply after sealing them, which would prevent Cortana from hacking it. This is because a human, even a modified one such as Master Chief, can't survive for very long if they're jettisoned out into space with no way of propelling themselves back to the ship. In Dead Space 2, Isaac's suit has it's own oxygen supply, but he dies anyways when sucked out of Titan Station. Master Chief's suit being vacuum-rated isn't going to make a difference if he's violently spaced into the void. And if Cortana can't hack Hal, she can certainly hack an electronic door lock.[/QUOTE THAT's going to be useful against a guy in vacuum rated power armor. Oh, and let's not forget Hal's best combat feats against boarders: opening airlocks and locking them closed. Hal can't do shit if he isn't even running. Why would Master Chief connect Cortana to the system at all, as opposed to Cortana directing the Master Chief to Hal's power supply, off switch, or even just the server room? If Cortana knows enough about Hal to hack him, odds are she also knows enough about his hardware to do a hard shut down. Can't really offer any useful details though. There are these things called PIEs and C-PIEs invented by Halsey that don't sound like anything that SB has discussed before.Īnd there's a ton of hacking and cyber-security related stuff in the story of the I Love Bees campaign. Search for the word "spider" to find said sections. Portions of this page have references to a Forerunner Catalog unit successfully hacking into certain ONI networks, but having trouble with others. For any willing to look for it, I believe it was somewhere in Mortal Dictata, in the context of Black Box attempting to hack the Pious Inquisitor and having a cyber-duel with an angry Huragok.Īside from that my knowledge about this stuff hasn't improved much since the last thread on this topic, so I'll just dump anything that sounds related in here for the more educated to use or dissect at leisure. I can't point to any particular section, but I'm fairly certain password lockouts have been mention in the context of cyber-security at some point in the Kilo-5 trilogy.
